8th Aug 2009Special Feature 1;- Metrolink tram delivery. (30 images)
After receiving a lucky tip off (thanks Elliot, via Noel) that this tram had not long been seen on the M62 Motorway whilst on delivery, a quick trip by bus (with Noel) was made to the Metrolink tram depot just off Queens Road to wait and see if it had already turned up. Luckily, it hadn't, so we waited by the entrance and this is the series of shots taken of the low loader being reversed first, then driven into the Metrolink compound.

The heavy haulage was being provided by a MAN tractor unit, provided by haulage firm Prangl from Austria. There was also an Iveco van being used to help with the traffic for this delivery, and this vehicle can be seen in one of the photos below.

Sheffield Supertram, was the second of the new generation of Light Rail Networks to be opened, coming after the Manchester Metrolink system and opening on March 21st, 1994. The system was owned and operated, publically initially. It is now however operated by and maintained by Stagecoach and trades as Stagecoach Supertram.

The Sheffield Supertram network operates on three routes from Sheffield, to Middlewood, Meadowhall and Halfway, with a couple of short spurs on the main routes to Malin Bridge as well as Herdings Park. Although there are extensions planned to extend the network to Rotherham, Dore, Hellaby and Ranmoor. The current network however currently has a fleet of 25 Supertram vehicles which maintain services on the current network at between 5 and 10 minute peak frequencys.

The oldest tramway in Great Britain still running, now operated by Blackpool Transport Limited. The line runs from Starr Gate to Fleetwood along the promenade and is used by many visitors to Blackpool especially during the summer months.

Most, if not all of these photos have been taken while in Blackpool attending the Totally Transport event over the last couple of years.
27th Apr 2008Manchester Metrolink. (36 images)
Manchester Metrolink, which was the first of the new generation of tram systems to open in England. It opened in 1992 using the former rail lines from Manchester - Altrincham and Manchester - Bury, with some trams also running the full length of the system too. In 1997 an extension to Eccles was granted which is now in operation too. Using a fleet of 32 trams, of which 26 were the original fleet.

The tram system is owned by Greater Manchester PTE, but from 15th July 2007 is operated and maintained by Stagecoach Group who have gained a 10 year contract which will also include the new lines currently planned to be built to expand the system.
