| Manchester Metrolink, which was the first of the new generation of tram systems to open in England. It opened in 1992 using the former rail lines from Manchester - Altrincham and Manchester - Bury, with some trams also running the full length of the system too. In 1997 an extension to Eccles was granted which is now in operation too. Using a fleet of 32 trams, of which 26 were the original fleet.
The tram system is owned by Greater Manchester PTE, but from 15th July 2007 is operated and maintained by Stagecoach Group who have gained a 10 year contract which will also include the new lines currently planned to be built to expand the system. |
